The Process
The Selection Committee meets on the Monday before each round and is responsible for selecting our grade teams (1st – Metropolitan Cup), T20 team AW Green Shield and the Poidevin-Gray Shield team.
Team
Teams will be published on a Thursday morning “Digitally” before the
commencement of each round. The captain will contact all players who have been put in a grade lower to offer feedback. This will be initiated either face to face at training or via a phone call to the players mobile. If not answered a voice message will be left with an offer for the player to return the call to discuss further. The Selection Committee will only discuss the selection of teams and reasons for selection with the individual concerned. Should a player wish to further discuss their selections they will need to contact their Captain in the first instance, followed by the Head Coach or Chairman of Selectors.
Selection Committee:
The Selection Committee will comprise the Chairman of Selectors, independent selector (Head Coach) and the captain of each Grade (+ and -1 grade) for their particular team.
The Selection Committee is empowered to seek advice regarding selections from other identified people (Advisors), however the Selection Committee has sole responsibility for final selection of teams.
Factors Influencing Selection:
Individual Performance – The focus will be on all-round performance: batting, bowling AND fielding. Game awareness and performance in the context of the game will be noted.
Team Balance – Teams will be chosen with consideration to the type of game being played (2-day, 1-day, T20) and the number of batters, bowlers, allrounders etc.
Availability – Players who are unavailable for a round may not, depending on the reasoning, be automatically selected in the grade they were in prior to becoming unavailable. Family holidays, Schoolies etc are not acceptable
excuses. In these situations players will be selected in a grade lower than the previous round (*Subject to other availabilities)
Fitness – Players are individually responsible for maintaining an acceptable level of fitness, which will enhance overall team performance. All players must inform their captain and the chairman of selectors of any injury immediately.
Training Attendance – Training is compulsory. It is expected that 1st and 2nd grade players will practice twice a week, with lower grades at least once per week. If unable to attend due to work/study commitments players are expected to advise their captain at the commencement of the week. Failure to do so may impact selections.
Covers help – All players are expected to help with covers on their allocated days, for the home ground they are playing on. If they are unable to attend, then they can arrange for an alternative day. Generally, covers help may be required around 7-10 times a season, and will be announced a few weeks in advance.
Attitude – including attitude to the club, fellow players and administrators – This will include effort at training and on match day, timeliness of attendance and overall contribution to the performance of the team.
Rotation – Where we have an excess of players we will endeavour to rotate players through the Metropolitan Cup (6th Grade) team to ensure as many players as possible get the opportunity to play.
Green Shield Selection (U16s):
At the conclusion of the preceding season, the Green Shield coach will distribute an Expression of Interest to all interested applicants online. Once applications have closed, the selection committee, consisting of Club Head Coach, Green Shield Coach and Manager will cull the list and offer trial positions to selected players.
Players will then participate in a net trial where they will be assessed on their abilities by a selection committee of 5 (Club Head Coach, Green Shield Coach and Manager, two senior players).
Within 1 week of a net trial selectors will cull the squad to a managable number and then offer a position to players to participate in such trials. Subsequent trials may consist of further net trials, game situation simulations, fielding sessions or trial matches.
From these trials a squad of 15 will be selected. This squad can have up to 2 country based players.
All players selected are expected to attend all training sessions and are subject to the same selection guidelines and Premier Cricket NSW players.
Poidevin Gray Shield (U21’s)
The Poidevin Gray Shield competition runs on selected Sundays parallel to the NSW Premier Cricket Competition. All players that satisfy the age requirement, currently playing Premier Cricket will be considered for selection. The Head Coach, in consultation with the Chairman of Selectors and Poidevin Gray Manager will select a squad the week prior to each round. Players are subject to all NSW Premier Cricket selection processes. Please note, that selection in the previous fixture does not guarantee selection in subsequent fixtures.
